📍 Do you believe that one day in your career you’ll reach a stage where you know everything? Let me share a hard truth — expertism is a myth. There will never be a point where you have all the answers.
The only real progress is in being better than you were yesterday.
In this podcast of “The Accountant Show”, I’ll walk you through how to adopt a lifelong learning mindset in accounting and finance, along with a simple four-block daily learning system you can start today.
Welcome Back to The Accountant Show
Hello, dear accountants! I’m Divyesh Dave, your friend and fellow professional. Welcome back to another episode (and blog) of The Accountant Show.
This episode is part of our weekly community podcast of The Accountant Hub, a growing community where we help accountants and finance professionals gain clarity, confidence, and practical skills to build a successful, future-ready career.
Today’s topic is really important which is lifelong learning. If you truly want to stand out and achieve long-term success, you must adopt the mindset of being a learner for life.
Why Lifelong Learning Matters
When I began my career, I thought once I finished college and landed a job, I’d be set for life. But soon, the reality of our profession hit me — the world of accounting and finance is changing faster than ever:
New accounting and reporting standards
IFRS updates and compliance requirements
Emerging tools and technologies
The rise of data analysis, automation, and AI
I realized that if I didn’t upgrade myself, I would be left behind. That’s when I restarted my learning journey by connecting with mentors, enrolling in courses, and preparing for the US CMA.
The lesson I learned is;
The only accountants who grow are those who never stop learning.
Step 1: Expertism is a Myth
Even global leaders admit they don’t know it all. Jeff Bezos once said it’s good to know more, but always keep the mindset of a novice.
We live in an age where technology and industries are constantly evolving. If you stop learning, you don’t just stand still — you actually move backwards.
Think of your mind like a computer: we all have the same hardware, but we run on different versions of software. To run the latest programs, you must upgrade your operating system. The same applies to your knowledge and skills.
Step 2: The Four Blocks of Daily Learning
You don’t need endless hours of study or late nights buried in books. What you need is consistent, focused learning — just 30 minutes a day. Divide it into four blocks:
Learn About Yourself
Build self-awareness. Reflect on your strengths, weaknesses, and the person you want to become. Confidence on the inside reflects in the outside world.Learn About Your Profession
Stay updated on accounting standards, taxation, financial reporting, new tools, automation, and finance trends. Even 5 minutes of reading or practice daily keeps you ahead.Learn About Personal Development
Beyond technical skills, you need soft skills like communication, leadership, productivity, and negotiation. These skills are what move you from “accountant” to “leader.”Learn About Life
Explore topics like health, relationships, mindset, money management, and spirituality. Success in your career feels incomplete without success in your life.
👉 Start with 30 minutes a day (5–10 minutes per block). The secret is consistency.
Step 3: Apply What You Learn
Here’s the truth: learning without action is just entertainment.
Watching videos, reading books, or listening to podcasts won’t change your life unless you apply the lessons. Test what you’ve learned, observe the results, and adapt it to your career path.
Change will always feel uncomfortable — but growth never happens without change.
Remember, the accountants who succeed are not the ones who read the most books, but the ones who take small, consistent actions.
